Loving Our Lovable Babies

There is no greater joy for a mother than to have her newborn baby in her arms. For first timer moms in the past, the next  duties after giving birth, would be a mix of  trial and errors of a motherly instinct, from feeding, sleeping habits, monitoring the physical developments, clothing and tools of babies, and so on, of her newborn child. Fortunately for the modern moms of today, aside from the doting advice of families, relatives and friends, all baby care information are laid to her through books, the internet, televisions, etc.  So let's go over some general guidelines to bear in mind in taking care of our newborns  and  infants.

The skin of the baby is the most important aspect that a mom has to be very watchful, because this is the overall body part that is exposed and serves as the baby's protecting armor. The skin may have great adaptability with the new environment of the infant and thus needs special care. A baby's skin gets infected easily from the tools and products you use when bathing, to the clothing that you will choose the baby to wear. As the baby's skin tend to dry quickly, application of baby moisturizing lotion is advisable for application especially after a bath. Always use clean diapers and clothes to avoid allergies and irritation. The best baby monitor with wifi shall be used then.

The umbilical cord has to be properly taken cared off until it falls off. Use some antiseptic powder or alcohol with hygienic cotton in cleaning the area to avoid infection.

The baby's head or skull is still very delicate and not yet fully developed in newborns, and so be very delicate in using shampoos when bathing. Use natural mild baby shampoos to wash the few hairs at this stage, and be mindful of the soft and delicate scalp when you bath the infant.

Keep away babies from direct sunlight for a long time to avoid rashes and sunburns. Sure we want to give the baby a little dosage of the sunlight but do not over expose the infant. Sunburns affect the skin more at very young ages. So be very careful for babies not to get sunburn, as they have a hard time  sleeping in this condition.

Babies wet frequently and so they require diapers and so parents should be very considerate while using diapers. It is advisable that you change six to eight diapers daily to avoid rashes and infections. With the various kinds of diapers on the market, use a reliable and reputable brand of diaper to give more comfort to the infant. Rashes could be a result of yeast infection due to prolonged use of diaper, or due to dietary allergies, and so it is better to consult your pediatrician the soonest possible time.

Baby's growth spurt happens usually after 10 days of baby birth and on the third or sixth and twelfth weeks. Your pediatrician monitors this growth, and if not satisfactory, your breast-feeding alone may not be sufficient and for sure your doctor will recommend an increase of supply of milk and vitamins as required.
